Solenoid clicking on Starter, but starts if I bypass ignition?
Question by purcellzx9r: Solenoid clicking on Starter, but starts if I bypass ignition?
Hi, I live on a narrowboat. Please do not be put off answering if you know nothing about boats as engine is taken from a car/taxi and principle is the same.
Went to China for 3 weeks, before I left everything was fine, girlfriend living on it when something blew and all power went out. she called an “expert” to repair “it” who seems to have moved around a few wires, left off some connections and left her without any power until I got home.
I have got everything up and running again (by basically putting it back to how it was) except the engine will not start with live and ignition wire connected to the starter solenoid.
I turn the key and there is a loud click coming from the solenoid. solenoid is good as it was bought brand new 3 months ago to replace a knackered one (teeth had worn).
1. If I connect the starter battery directly to the UPPER thread on the solenoid with the ignition cable also on that thread and turn the key….. loud click. This is how I believe it should be but instead of the loud single click, the engine should start
2. If I connect the starter battery directly to the LOWER thread on the solenoid with the ignition cable ON the upper thread WITHOUT turning the key….. starter motor spins but does not engage the engine, as I would expect because the igntion wire tells it to shoot forward to engage.
3. If I connect the starter battery directly to the lower thread on the solenoid with the ignition cable OFF, there are a few sparks, the starter shoots out, engages the flywheel and WILL START THE ENGINE.
Now whilst I’m happy to do this as an emergency measure to be able to move the boat, it’s dangerous and a fire risk and my girlfriend would be petrified of doing this. Doesn’t help that I am going to China again for nigh on a month as of sunday so need to get this fixed.
Wiring all looks good and properly insulated, engine is a BMC 2.2 I believe. There is a battery bank with isolator switch but this is not an issue as I have connected the starter battery only directly to the starter motor and the engine will engage.
I appreciate any help you can give.
WHY IS IT CLICKING INSTEAD OF STARTING?

Answer by jtexas
Just because a part is new, doesn’t mean it’s good.
Terminology: The solenoid is an electromechanical switch. When engaged, an electromagnet is turned on which connects two contact points, closing the circuit for power to the starter motor, which is what makes the pinion gear shaft spin. The “click” you hear is the sound of the solenoid connecting the battery to the starter motor, while simultaneously operating the lever which pushes the pinion gear out to the flywheel. (You might know all this, if so forgive me for stating the obvious).
When you said “instead of the click” I believe it should be “in addition to the click” except the sound of the engine starting drowns out the sound of the click.
For your tests, are you pulling the battery (+) cable off the terminal post where it normally resides and instead touching it to the posts indicated, or are you using a jumper wire to connect the battery to said posts?
In test 1, turning the key to “start” is supposed to supply 12V to that post, energizing the solenoid. By connecting the battery to it directly, you are bypassing the keyswitch, it should energize the solenoid as soon as you touch it to the post, the key should be irrelevant. When the solenoid is energized it should engage the pinion and spin the starter motor.
In test 2, you are basically bypassing the solenoid and supplying power directly to the starter motor. The result you described looks like what I would expect.
In test 3, with the ignition cable disconnected, it should be exactly the same as test 2 with the key turned off.
I got it………the battery (+) cable is supposed to be on the upper solenoid terminal post, and the ignition switch cable belongs on the lower post.
Try it, I bet it works!
I still don’t understand why your test #1 got that result…….

Why did 30 Republican Senators vote in favor of using tax payer dollars to employ gang rapists?
Question by Culture Warrior: Why did 30 Republican Senators vote in favor of using tax payer dollars to employ gang rapists?
Two questions: If ACORN was defunded, why hasn’t Halliburton been for this? Why did 30 Republican Senators vote against an amendment that would no longer offer companies government contracts if their management prevented employees who have been raped from contacting the authorities?
Background:
“Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone, the company put her under guard in a shipping container with a bed and warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she’d be out of a job.
In a lawsuit filed in federal court against Halliburton and its then-subsidiary KBR, Jones says she was held in the shipping container for at least 24 hours without food or water by KBR, which posted armed security guards outside her door, who would not let her leave. Jones described the container as sparely furnished with a bed, table and lamp.
Finally, Jones says, she convinced a sympathetic guard to loan her a cell phone so she could call her father in Texas.
“I said, ‘Dad, I’ve been raped. I don’t know what to do. I’m in this container, and I’m not able to leave,’” she said. Her father called their congressman, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas.
“We contacted the State Department first,” Poe told ABCNews.com, “and told them of the urgency of rescuing an American citizen” — from her American employer.
Poe says his office contacted the State Department, which quickly dispatched agents from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad to Jones’ camp, where they rescued her from the container.”

Amendment voted against by 30 Republican senators:
The amendment to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill that would withhold defense contracts from companies like KBR “if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.”

But… but… KBR is not a liberal organization. Alinsky! Socialism! Aaaahhh!
“With ACORN, we had concrete proof that they were breaking the law. Anyone could watch the tape and see what was happening.”
You do know that the child prostitutes and those brothels mentioned in that tape don’t actually exist in real life, right?
Jamie Leigh Jones, on the other hand, is a real live person.

Q&A: John Lewis drops Hillary?
Question by pdooma: John Lewis drops Hillary?
Because he wants to be on the side of History? Is that how you “support” someone? Will he change sides again if Hillary wins Texas and Ohio?
“I want to be on the side of the people, on the side of the spirit of history,” he said.
This is after this:
In mid-January, Lewis alleged “a deliberate, systematic attempt on the part of some people in the Obama camp to really fan the flame of race” after remarks by Clinton were interpreted as a slight on King’s legacy.

I have heard this more than once, Sheriff says on TV. ” A car went left of center and smashed into another car, killing 2, we are waiting on blood test results for alcohol before we press charges on the driver of the car that went left of center”. Sober or not that driver killed 2 people, what is the need to find if .08 or not? I have never driven drunk, but I do know right from wrong.
