How do I get rid of stray neighborhood cats without getting the pet police involved…?

OK, I moved into an RV park in Tempe Arizona and the lot I’m in was overrun by the cat mafia… Moving into my new battle-zone required breaking out my old weapon,,, the rake and I raked up pounds of cat excrement and still can smell the funk 2 days later… I have waged an all out war against organized cat crime and the community must be used to the extortion because I have witnessed timid park residents feed these sub feline’s… Well,,, I had to resort to big firepower and bought this commercial cat repellant yesterday and it didn’t faze these gangster felines because this morning I noticed fresh cat grenades in a few places and noticed a couple of real mangy looking cats still chilling with cold multi-colored eye’s centered to close just a couple feet from the perimeter of repellant I laid down around my 21 footer… This stuff had some type of non toxic pepper and spice concoction that would drop a normal house cat,,, I don’t know if these hood cat’s are huffing cat nip or what but I am at a loss for what to do… I have read all types of internet homemade cat repellant and heard that it doesn’t work and from the looks of things my 16 dollar investment didn’t do much either… I love cat’s but not these ally cat’s,,, and I don’t want to get involved with the shelter because sheriff Joe will lock them up in the old condemn Phoenix Jail which is where animals from maricopa county end up,,, I guess it’s cheaper to house them in the old jail instead of building a new facility and Joe brags about the fact that the animals are fed better than the human inmates who get 2 meals a day at a cost that is less than the cost to feed an animal 3 meals in that same day here in maricopa county… I would rather gather some recipe’s from the answer’s audience and pick the best solution which I will pick after testing each method on these “made” cat’s…

    Try this….

(The first two anyway. I don’t think you want a dog on top of the cat problem LOL)
As an animal lover I like your humane approach :) You may be able to contact a shelter. Some have catch and release programs where they take them to get them fixed so at least the population won’t grow. Outdoor/feral cats have a much shorter lifespan so at least as the older ones die off, you won’t be dealing with their offspring as well. Good luck!

I have loads of cats that I feed. I have no money for this. But what would they do if I didn’t feed them? They would actually die of disease and starvation. They will do anything to survive and they don’t understand why they were abandoned!

No thanks to jerks out there, I do get them all spayed and neutered. But not feeding these guys is not an option as far as I can see, as they will wander, find nothing, come back skinny, diseased and starved, or just get run over……

Thanks to all of you who have let your kittens off in the country, behind Wal-Mart, in residential areas. If you ever wondered what happened to them, they’re either run over, over-run with fleas and parasites, starving, have mange, and don’t have a clue why they have no warm home like they did when they were babies. They wonder what they did wrong.

My deal is that people do not get their cat spayed/neutered, let them have a litter, take them to Safeway and when no one will adopt them, they let them go behind Safeway at the end of the day. One male and one female cat will produce over 500,000 exponentially over 7 yrs. I am just one who traps them and gets them neutered………at MY expense…….thanks. I feed them. I hate you!!!!!!!

first of all, thanks for making me grin with this craftily (and comically) worded Q. that eHow article is correct about the coffee grounds and marigolds… however, we are dealing with a crew of cats that hangs with Sinatra and Dino at the Copa and gets their drinks comped, so i would step it up a notch and try an herb called rue (Ruta Graveolens). cats don’t like it, but it’s mild; so they won’t be hurt, and your nose won’t be offended. also, i don’t know the setup at your place, but is fencing an option? pointy fences of a certain height detour even the most determined Frank Cat-stellos.

Have you tried a scarecrow sprinkler yet? Basically, it’s a motion activated sprinkler. I know you’re in a desert zone but to train them not to come in your yard, it would probably be worth it.

I would definitely recommend you involve a trap-neuter-return (TNT) group if the people feeding are not practicing TNT. While it won’t get rid of the feces, it will reduce Alto of undesirable behaviors such as the horrendous odor of unentered male urine and fighting, as well as, stabilizing and in time, reducing the population. The Animal Defense League of Arizona has a spay/neuter hot line to contact for TNT assistance – Phone: 602 265-SPAY (7729) or Toll-free: (866) 952-SPAY
http://www.adlaz.org/spay/TNR.htm You can tell if they are practicing TNT by looking at the cats ears. If one of the ears is “clipped” – the top portion is lopped off so one ear is flat across the top instead of a triangle, usually the left ear, then the cat has been fixed. You will want to talk to the feeders and explain how it is better for the animals in the long-term health wise, as well as, better for the community, and that they will be returned. Alley Cat Allies has a lot of good information for talking to people – http://www.alleycat.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=679

I use a three pronged attack to keep cats away from my garden. The first is to secure the boundary. Make sure the usual routes they take in are blocked off as best you can. Next invest in some of those plastic security spikes for the top of your fences. This should keep the less persistent cats out. If you have cats messing in your flower beds then consider using a fertiliser such as silent roar or some other which contains the scent of a larger predator such as a lion or wildcat. If the cats are going all over your lawn them you should get an ultra sonic cat deterrent such as a big cheese / defendor. Different cats are deterred by different things so only by using a combination will you have the best shot at getting rid! Good Luck!
