How to measure river depth when fishing?
ByIf Im going to be fishing at a park, but I don’t know how deep is the river or the spot for me to cast. I would like to know what is the best way to measure the depth of that spot while fishing on the side, not on a boat or any kind?

If you don’t have a map showing the bottom’s layout, you will just have to cast into different areas and see how much line comes out… There may be other ways, but that is how I do it.

you could use a slip floater with a bobber stop. just keep moving the bobber stop up until you hit the bottom. it’s kinda expensive but they do make a fish finder that you can tie to your rod and cast it out, it sends a signal to a receiver that displays everything that a regular fish finder does.
hope this helps

Take a 10 foot pole, 10 is easy to work with. Cast out to were you wish, Set the pole at waters edge. Now triangulate the depth of the line angle, when the line is tight. Guesse how much bow is in the line and remove a inch to a foot. After you have done this some you will get good at guessing the depth from the line angle.
