Whats peoples take on driving cross country as oppose to flying? Fuel, extra mileage cost?

I’m looking into traveling from VA to CA to see family. I’ve been doing some math and I am surprised at how much the cost is just for rentals and mileage. Granted it’s my first time looking into it and so I may not be looking at the right places or I just never considered how much it is for rv rentals. I’ve got a wife and 2 kids in tow, both under 4 yrs and I want the trip to be as easy as possible; however, it seems more cost effective flying than driving. I’m not worried about the 3 days of driving time if we get a camper. Any other considerations that I left out? (Fuel, extra mileage cost, possible motels, food)

Only alternative you could look into is renting a fair sized minivan. Still not cheap but more affordable. I’ve also heard that some RV rental companies sometimes look for drivers to return RVs left at one branch after a one way rental.
