Where is the closest absolute remote camping site to Philadelphia?

I’m a country boy stuck in the city and am really craving some good bushwhack camping. I don’t want anything even resembling a plug in camp site. I’d like a hike at least a couple of miles, then be able to set up camp wherever I choose, build a big fire, maybe shoot off some rounds, etc. I’m willing to drive, but Allegheny is pretty far. Is there anywhere closer?

Go up the north east extension (rt. 476) to the Poconos. There’s good camping anywhere north of the Allentown exit.

About an hour and 20 minutes to Jim Thorpe from Philly.

If your really willing to drive, I suggest the Lake George or Champlain area in upstate NY. It’s about 7 hours from Philly, but blows away anything PA has to offer.

Check out the New Jersey Pinelands (aka – the NJ Pinebarrens).

This place is about as remote as its gets, many different campgrounds.
