French Customs ransacked my camper van, causing damage and mental anguish – how can I claim against them?

I was nearing the end of a touring holiday 2 days ago, through France (down the eastern side), followed by a trip into Spain, then back up along the coast of France to get home to the UK. A few KM north of Biarritz we pulled into a layby for a rest break. Ahead of us blocking the road was a French customs (Duane) who asked me to pull over. They proceeded to search the van from top to bottom, causing damage in multiple areas (pulling off the interior – breaking the poppets), opening all my food and letting the dog at it (which caused me to vomit, when I discovered a dog hair in a cake) and finally, allowing the sniffer dog to put its foot through one of the speakers on the front seat (mains speakers that run off a leisure battery). Total damage will run to hundreds or euros, for repairs, replacement food, replacement speakers and mental anguish.
I have photos of the damage caused, and took the photos in the places they occured. (They don’t let you near your vehicle when they are searching so I could not have filmed ‘live’) I also have a stop motion video of them pulling me over, with identifyable faces (number plates are a little blurry). These photos also show the exact time and date.
I need to know who to contact to start proceedings against the French customs, they can’t just go around breaking innocent people’s property, and causing mental trauma to tourists.

When they found nothing, they jumped into their vehicles and zoomed off, so I had no chance to question them at the time. I didn’t actually notice the damage until they had left.

Many thanks for your answers.

  1. HD says:

nothing you can do, they have the right to search anything/anyone they want.

  2. Quizzard says:

Customs officials in any country have an almost unrestricted right to search vehicles and persons. Yes, they can even damage your vehicle. Your rights end at the border.

You should contact the Douane and file a report, but it’s unlikely you will be compensated.
