Camper vans are great for touring Europe. Some countries like Switzerland only let you do overnight stays in proper campsites, other countries have areas where camping away from organized campsites overnight is tolerated or allowed. France is very relaxed. Portugal, Spain and Italy seem OK too and you can often park up on beaches or picnic spots. Often farmers will let you stay on their land if you ask them. If you’re discrete it is often possible to sleep over on the roadside in suburban areas, but there’s always the chance you’ll get moved on and I’d be careful parking overnight anywhere in the centre or in rougher or isolated areas of cities. Most cities have camp sites, some have them quite close to the centre, e.g. Paris, Florence, Montelimar, Pisa to name but four I’ve visited. Other cities, e.g. Rome have campsites outside the city but with fast suburban rail links right into the city centre. In the South of France and other places there are campsites which have an enormous range of amenities – shops, restaurants, pools, beaches etc, etc. There are a lot of festivals during the summer right across Europe and they usually have camping areas which can be a lot of fun.

For a camper van an overnight stop at a proper camp site is usually around 5-10 euros. A lot of the better places in Europe to visit can have narrow and windy roads, so pick a smaller camper van than you might drive in the USA.
