Hey people, any you guys know anything about import Japanese Camper Vans? Im lookin at bringing one in myself to save some money. A few dealers selling but seem a bit pricey for me, read on forums that importing yourself is always cheaper. i never imported a car let alone a camper van! must be importable as quite a few seem for sale. my mate told me about using an agent to do the importing for me but they all seem to sporty car orientated. can i access the auctions or do the dealers have the access? Looking at Hiace, have two small children but think we should fit inside snuggly.
ta,
Will.

Hello there,
I was in a similar position to you a few years ago and ended up buying a nice toyota hiace from a dealer. Looking back it was expensive and I wish I had thought about importing then but I was to rushed.
There are a few dealerships who import these camper vans as their speciality such as popplar motor traders online and a few others allgys?
I have noticed that the prices are all pretty similar rangin from 7.9k upwards for hiaces. They all must have quite big profit margins by the looks of it. I think its pretty easy to get them off ebay now for 6.5k + so how they can justify the prices, maybe they are all minters but anyway they still seem good value compared to most rip off euro campers eg. VW
The only site I have found so far that seems to specialize in importing camper vans to order is a site called super camper http://www.supercamper.co.uk ifound it by typing “japanese motorhome import” in google.
they source and import for commission of 500 which if you compare to some of the other import agents is good value – they also have a small stock but specialise more in importing to order. Auto advan were a big one which costed around 650 but they seem to have dissapeared? Not sure if they bother with camper vans and motorhomes though – i’ve seen a few comments regarding them on their old forum but the forum is dead now, and they didnt get many replies regarding the campers – also they seem to specialize in importing performance and 4×4 like most of the other import agents do. I think alggys import too but i’ve heard bad things about them with clocked nissan figaros etc.
I did contact the supercamper site and they seemed helpful enough and the hiaces could be had for about 4.7k upwards even with the cr*p exchange rate. including their commission which is saving a bloody lot for the sake of waiting 5 to 7 weeks. obviously there is a risk involved in importing any car but im sure most campers are more well looked after than most performance cars anyway. they cand get them inspected before bidding also which maybe advisable.
They even have access to import things like American campers like winnnebagos and some like isuzu elf campers , toyoace which i had never even heard of.
I’d suggest contacting them regarding importing to order.
I’ve imported with an agent before (bonsaicars) but that was a performance vehicle, the whole thing revolves around them sending you vehicles with their details usually via email then contacting you by phone or email (whichever you prefer) and then they will bid when you want them too, obviously you pay a small deposit first before they will bid, just in case you run off and they are left with a vehicle. then the vehicle arrives and you pick it up from docks and register and mot it, which is dead easy. the hardest bit is the wait. When I sell my old Hiace I’ll be upgrading and will almost definitely import one to order.
