By “hippie van” usually means the earlier split window air cooled bus. pre 68.. then with the “bay window” van in 68 on to the mid to late 70′s was the air cooled van and starting round 1970 with the pan cake engine from 1700 up to 2000. cc engine. Gas mileage varied from 15 to 17 for most depending how you drove it and any head wing or mole hill you had to climb. Thought everything was available in alabama. Check with used cars on the Samba web site.
Best one I ever had was a 76 Westfalia with the 1800 big valve engine EFI. Had a stand up hard top and went 70 mph on the flat, but hated a good cross wind.
