Is there anything to do before I bring my Dog Camping?
ByI am bringing my dog camping for 3 days. He’s never been to a forest before, and so I was wondering what precautions I take. Is there anything I can do to prevent ticks, mites, fleas, etc.? Or is there just treatment after, if he does get something? What other things can I do to make sure this is a safe trip?

Revolution, Frontline and other meds are available at your vet and will prevent fleas and ticks.
Make sure he has up to date info on his tags and microchip if he has one. If he’s separated from you, you want to be sure he finds his way back.
Don’t assume he can defend himself from predators. Always make sure he’s protected from any and all wildlife you may encounter. Chasing bunnies, of course, doesn’t count. LOL!!

My dog (a cockapoo) used to always have ticks after playing outside. Then we went to the vet and got Frontline, which is a once-monthly application that you put on your dogs neck. it takes five minutes once a month and he has never gotten a tick, flea, or anything else since we started using it. I know they sell it at your vet’s office, but I have also seen it at BJ’s. just make sure you get the right kind for your dog’s weight.

Frontline gets rid of ticks, fleas, all that junk and keeps them away. Also be sure that he has all his shots! especially his rabies shot. Have fun!

frontline plus or one of the others. We take ours too and I use frontline. Works for us. Don’t let him run loose, too many dangers.Make sure he is up to date on all his shots.

Frontline Plus
or
K9 Advantix
are two good treatments.
Frontline plus kills fleas, ticks and eggs.
K9 Advantix repels mosquitoes, ticks, fleas.
Also make sure shots are up to date.

i don’t treat my dog with chemicals, but i ALWAYS take a flea comb to the woods. before going in the tent/camper for the night, i give them a good brush down. a flea comb will remove ticks so you don’t have to worry.
if you are into chemicals, use Frontline or a similar product.
make sure that your dog is UTD on shots, and is wearing his tag. it’s a good idea to have a tag with your cell phone number on it, just in case he gets lost away frmo home. (all i have on my dog’s ID tag is my cell number, and he also wears his town reg tag and rabies tag.
watch him carefully while you’re camping and make sure he doesn’t eat anything off the ground!!
have fun!!

Be sure and have a leash and/or tie out. A dog that has never been in the woods may try to roam or run. A preventative flea/tick spray in addition to your regular treatment is a plus. Also, watch where he is running/playing for sharp stones, debris, sticks that may hurt his paws. And lastly, check your campsite for trash or litter left by previous campers that can harm your dog (fish hooks, glass, cans, etc.).
Have FUN!!!

well when you get there put your dog on a leash and let it slowly adapt to the new enviroment. once its calm and not trying to break free from your grip tie it up some where close and set up camp and then take it for a small walk and let her get use to the idea. to prevent ticks and fleas use dog dip and petline sold at your local vet. n=mites arnt preventable..there are shampoos for it but your dog will still get mites. be sure to wash it before you go and after. good luck and have fun!

We have just taken our dog on her first camping trip. I wouldn’t worry about fleas, ticks and mites to be honest and your regular flea routine should prevent this anyway, but if your dog does get any of these then of cause there is treatment for after wards. I took my dog for a week and she was socializing with other dogs but she didn’t pick anything.
Unless you are entirely sure that your dog will return when you let him off the lead you should keep the lead on him – this is a strange place that he has never been to before and there will be many small animals to chase and smells to investigate!
We decided to take a basic first aid kit for our dog, which basically contains things you would take for people (google for items recommended, I can’t remember what we took and its in the car right now).
Basically, common sense is the most important thing! Good luck and have fun with your dog

Neem oil for fleas, ticks etc
I take a dog first aid kit, with anything I need, like vinegar/bicarb of soda for stings, bandages, and vet wrap, tweezers, salt (for salt water bathing of cuts/grazes) aloe vera gel( after cleaning will cover so no dirt gets in) Aqueous cream-great burns cream used in burns units in hospitals( so burns or moisturiser), children’s high UV sun cream, Vitamin E, great ‘repairer and healer’ and also encourages eating and keeps muscle built if a dog is injured, Powdered glucose to put in the drinking water to stop dehydration in hot weather, saline, brewers yeast tablets ( lots of vits & minerals in them), cotton wool, gauze, citronella candles will keep flys away or citronella or eucaliptus oil if you don’t want burning candle.
Large plastic bin bag to put any wet/soiled dog beds in , so it doesn’t attract flies until they can be washed.
Baby wipes, pooh bags, extra lead and collar, all with disc attached and mobile number on ( both lead and collar) I also take a harness again with disc and have a talking collar where you can change the message to ‘where ever you are staying and I will pay for vet treatment’ espeically if you are travelling around and tells people if my dog is found injured to take it to the vet as i will pay the costs.
Either look on the internet for the local vets, print out direction to at least 2 from camp in case of emergency.
Washing line, which can be attached to his collar and he can be off lead ( as long as he is obedient) let it trail, so you can quickly get control of him by putting your foot on the nearest bit to you if you need to/he gets scared by something without chasing him

my dog is going camping 2 for 3 days the first time she went camping was a last minute thing and i forgot 2 bring her food bowl. lol we tied her to a table when we were not walking her and she slept in the tent with us at night but we were with other people. We went swimming and fishing so we couldnt take her along but there was always at least one person at the campsite that can watch her but you might be doing things differently but still take the basics because you may not need everything you think you might because it isnt that bad on a dog she did better then i thought she would he wouldnt need any special stuff unless your doing extreme camping of some sort.
Glad I could help! :>
