What is the best breed of small dogs for a pit bull lover?
My husband and I love APBT and other pit bull type breeds. We love their temperament (loyal, smart, adventurous, etc.) and their coats are easy to take care of! Unfortunately, we are about to move into an apartment that doesn’t allow pit bulls or any dogs over 25 lbs. Does anyone know of a smaller, yet similar breed?
We don’t really want a small, yappy dog. We want a dog that we can take hiking or camping! I was thinking that a beagle might be a good match, but I’m not sure.
Please give us some helpful advice and do no post if you aren’t an APBT fan and just have something hateful to say.
I do agree that I was wrong to say yappy as any good owner should train their dog well.
On another note, Jessica, I am going to adopt a dog, but I was simply wondering if there were certain breeds that I should look out for. I don’t like buying from breeders, but there’s no harm in seeking out a certain breed when looking for a pet. So, calm down.

You are WAY off with a Beagle. An UNTRAINED small dog or any dog for that matter is yappy! Also one who lacks the proper amount of exercise & mental stimulation.
I love APBT’s & have owned one & personally my small dog of choice is the Chihuahua.-My dogs are NOT yappy, I wouldn’t allow them to bark uncontrollably.
Beagles should be owned by those who plan to use the breed for what it was intended & if not it’s physical & mental needs still need to be met & btw, Beagles can be very vocal.
Try a Patterdale terrier, they’re great dogs. My manager breeds them they’re small but tuff and his arent yappy

The closest thing I can think of are Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs.
A Beagle is not anywhere close to a Pit Bull, and will generally be over 25 pounds. And they are howlers.
A Rat Terrier or Jack Russel Terrier, they have all the energy that a Pitt does and will keep up effortlessly on a hike, they are friendly to strangers if socialized, They are very loyal and very very smart. They shed quite a bit but if you love the breed you could deal with that. The barking can be trained, but if they are exercised enough and have enough stimulation it shouldn’t be a problem, they will bark if they are board but that goes for all dogs. They love to hunt though, you can stimulate their mind by giving them something to hunt. We used to have one that would hunt mice all day long. We also do this thing where we take 3-4 small treats and hide them in one room and then tell him to go get them. He would spend an hour looking for the treats. He loves it.
Just go to a shelter and find a dog that meets these requirements. Honestly, how hard is that?
