What is the recruitment process for joining the US Navy?

I’m joining from overseas, and I haven’t spoken with a recruiter yet, but I’m hoping to join the US Navy – as a legal US resident.

What is the recruitment process involved when joining the US Navy as a rating?
How many tests are there, and how long does it take to start boot camp from initially signing up?

Thank you

Well if you are enlisting there is only one written test, the ASVAB, which isn’t that bad. YOu would basically talk to your recruiter and you’ll take a practice ASVAB in the office. Based on the results of your practice you will either be told to study harder of you did bad, or to take the actual ASVAB if you did well. Once you take the ASVAB and get your scores you will have a better understanding of what rate’s (jobs) are able to participate in. You would pick a job from the list of those you are eligible and the recruiter would start your paperwork. You would then be taken to MEPS for all of your initial screenings. MEPS is an all day even where you do medical screenings, background type checks, lots and lots of paperwork, and usually the last thing you do is talk to a job councilor. WIth the job councilor you will negotiate your contract (i.e. bonus amount if there is one, jobs that are open, wait times so on and so on.) Once you pass all of the screenings and have done your contract and signed they will tell you how long you have to wait. In some cases it can be next day and in some cases it can be several months maybe even over a year (I had to wait 8 months). After your wait time you will go to MEPS again and do some more paperwork do your official swear in and then get on a bus to the airport and start your experience. Good luck and thanks for the consideration in serving.
