whats the cheapest way to travel around the States?

I want to do something like wicked camper, but its too expensive. Are their any cheaper ways other than hitchhiking or walking. I want hire a van, or camper or car but do you know of any cheaper companies than wicked camper or just from your experiences?
Find some travel companions and share the expense.
If you want to travel around States than why you want to hire a camper the best thing for you will be to buy a second hand camper and travel around and then sell it on your way back to home country. Hiring a camper for such long duration of time will be very expensive. Also you need to find some companion that can share that camper cost, gas, and food cost all the way.
