When did congress forget that they represent AMERICANS not their party?

For decades it seems to me Congress has been fighting each other and refusing to give on any issue. They do not spend time together outside of work, they have separate lobbying companies, it is almost as if two armed camps have taken up residence in the Capitol. When did this rancor start and what can be done to remind these yahoos that they are supposed to work for the ordinary citizen not their party?
Pat B. : However, should there not be a time when we subject our personal interests and pursue the best interests of our community and nation as a whole?

It goes back over 200 years. I can’t remember, but I believe it was Jefferson who warned us about the 2 party system and allowing loyalty to one of the parties to overtake the interest of the greater good. So, despite the media’s portrayal to the contrary, this is nothing new.
Good question. Money from special interest groups control everything that happens on Capitol Hill.
I email my congressman that all the time. They need a house cleaning to make our point.
You say they should work for their party, but you forget why they were elected.
If someone I voted for favored something that was not in my best interest I would be disappointed. They fight each other for the interests of the people that voted for them.
For example, as a Bush supporter, I was hugely disappointed when he started passing bailouts and big government junk. I voted for him to represent my views, not liberal views.
IF THEY DIDN’T WARE NECKTIES THE FORESKIN WOULD COME UP OVER THERE HEADS . ” AMERICA HELD HOSTAGE DAY 29.”
This philosophical dichotomy is nothing new in the two party system.
The liberal media, however, wants everyone to see it as only a Republican problem by portraying the Republicans as obstructionists hoping to derail a democratic President.
Still the democrats have always acted as obstructionists at times when a Republican president is in office.
The real issue is that the Republicans and Democrats, in many areas, hold philosophically opposite view points.
That is is likely a good thing. If all politicians thought the same way with no opposition from anyone then…the government would be a dictatorship.
That day the U.S.A fall’s comepletely.
THANK YOU!
“Hey maybe I should vote to get the troops out…. Oh wait that’s what a liberal would do. **** that”
“Hey maybe it’s not a good idea to make abortions as easy as buying a big mac….. Oh wait that’s what neocons do. **** that”
They work for whoever has the deepest pockets. Its all about kickbacks for them.
What can be done to remind them who they actually work for?
I think another Boston Tea Party of some sort or other…….
