Who has advice for camping out on the street for the Rose Parade?

My teenagers really want to do it, but I don’t know how to pick a good spot, and could use advice about what to bring – can I bring my Coleman camp stove to cook on? Is the atmosphere really rowdy? Are people kind – will someone try to “muscle” us out of our spot?

The atmosphere is not really rowdy, but it is New Years Eve and there is a bit of a party atmosphere and people are generally in a good mood. They do not allow Alcohol which helps cut it down. A camp stove has been allowed in the past so it should not be a problem. You can not camp out until12 Noon on 12/31. Just about any place along the route will be good if you are on the front row. But generally you will want to be on Colorado about mid route. If you get there between 12 and 2 on 12/31 you should be fine. Just be prepared it will be in the high 30′s/low 40′s at night and probably near 70 by parade time so you will need to be in layers.
Generally the closer it gets to the parade the more “musculing” that would be done. But if you have all your people there they will not try to crowd you out. But it is also good to become friends with your neighbors as there is strenght in numbers if you have some numbskull trying to do that.
Just when you park be very aware of parking regulations. If you park in a no parking zone you will be towed.
This link will give you all the regulations for the parade route.

BTW: You do not want to be under or near the Bridge on Sierra Madre @ 210. Any float over height will retract before it gets to this point and you will miss the full effect.
I go towards the end of the route, under the last bridge, for protection from dew or rain, AND sun. That way I’m right next to the staging area so I can check out the floats after wards.
