Why is it my camper van starts but will not keep running unless I press the gas pedal?

I have a 1979 Dodge camper van, it has a carburetor. I had problems starting it because of the old battery, so I recently changed the battery and now it starts amazingly fast, but once started if I let go the gas it stops. Actually that’s normal, it used to take about a minute of giving it fuel, then it would idle fine, but now I do this for over 5 minutes and once I let go the pedal, it takes 5 seconds and it stops. As if the motor won’t take any gas on it’s own.
Any idea what is causing the problem?

You answered your own question. Clean out the carb, have it tuned, and change the fuel filter. A lot of older cars have a small filter in the front of the carb, behind a gas line. That’s the easy one to change and it makes a difference. Cheap too.
Replace “Fuel Return Check Valve on Carb. Fuel Line Inlet and Rebuild Carb.”
Carburetor. Adjust or repair as necessary.
