Solar Power from Space
Posted by: | Comments
Solar Power Satellites (SPS) are fairly large structures in space that convert solar energy, captured as solar irradiation, into an energy form that can be transmitted wirelessly (Wireless Power Transmission – WPT) to any remote location with a receiver station, either on Earth, to high altitude platforms, to other spacecraft or even to surfaces of the moon or other planets.

Northwest UU Earth Ministry Solar Power Project
Posted by: | Comments
On Jan 29, 2009 Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta began its three year mission to free itself from the coal-fired electrical grid. Installation of 20 Schuco-USA solar photovoltaic (PV) modules was completed constituting the first phase of a 108 solar module array. The Congregation is combining solar energy and energy conservation to reach its ultimate goal of zero carbon emission. The Congregation undertook this project under the leadership of its Earth Ministry Team and in reverence of Unitarian Universalists’ seventh principle, respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. Upon completion the array will generate 2540kWh/month or 30480kWh/year of clean electricity.

People who know about Solar Power and Wind Turbines?
Posted by: | CommentsI am looking at my bill and I use on average about 50 KWH per day…..I dont know if thats high but I want to know what size of an solar power panel should I get or wind turbine to at least cut this in half or more….I would rather want the system to be grid tied.
By the way I live in middle Tennessee we are in zone 4 so we get 4.5 hours of direct sun and I dont now about average wind speeds.
Is Solar Power Good Business? – VOA Story
Posted by: | Comments
Climate change is now a popular topic. World leaders are discussing it this week at the G8 summit in Prague. And just last week in San Jose, California, high tech industry leaders gathered to give solar energy a boost. The global warming issue definitely is hot. Al Gore’s documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth”, helped make human induced climate change a glitzy issue. The film won an Academy award and has gotten a lot of attention. But is climate change now good business? The St. Francis of Assisi School in London is the first of 100 schools across Britain that will be fitted with solar technology. And in Palo Alto, California, the sun powers all the townhouses in a development that opened just last month. Stephanie Pruitt, of Warmington Homes, says, “It will create significant cost savings in electricity bills for homeowners. And we do see this as the wave of the future.” Nearby, the Silicon Valley area hopes to take the lead in the solar power industry. Solar power is a $15 billion global industry. Not huge, but the Solar Energy Industries Association in the US says the business is expanding by 40 percent each year. Businessman Alan Gartner says it is striving to meet the needs of the market. “I do not think I would be here unless I thought our company was wildly capable of morphing and changing and meeting whatever the needs of the energy market are.” Industry leaders say they still need assistance from national governments. In the US, the push is to extend tax credits …

Solar power advice? What kind of repair does this typically need?
Posted by: | CommentsI’m thinking of adding an addition to the house and putting in solar power (electricity, not heating water). Any experiences to report? I’m afraid it will break down and nobody will be available to fix it. Also if it needs repair, it might eat into savings so that electricity ends up costing more.
