Can Las Vegas run on solar power?

It seems like an ideal location for it and God knows the casinos have enough money to adopt it.

no as if now…. but in future for sure… the reason I am saying that solar energy doesnt produce as much electrecity as other sources do and those sources are the one that are prowering them….

  2. gardenoflia says:

of course. It’s the desert. The technology is there. It’s a matter of will.
You could be the one to make it happen.
Be the change you want to see in the world.

Well if you cover all the land and mountains around LV with solar panels and batteries then you could power LV with solar panels. But I’ll bet the environmentalist would oppose it and I’m sure they aren’t going to pay for it.
So yes you can in theory but no you can’t in reality.

With a large enough array, maybe. It is not far from a solar steam generation plant, which is another use for solar energy that is not talked about much. But Vegas is all about decadence and extremes.

    yes and no.
obviously their lights are on all night, when there’s not a lot of solar power.
however, their A/C is on all day, when there’s lots.

i would suspect that there are locations for wind farms west of them.

but consider, what moral benefit do they provide to society?
it doesn’t seem as if they’d be spending money for anyone’s benefit but their own.

well its surrounded by desert so yes defo but you would need to be able to store it coz its at night that vegas uses all the energy it has

  8. Fight Tyranny says:

When you understand that solar and wind only provide about 2% of the energy needed for any town to function, you realize that the answer is no and will always be no.

The most efficient energy sources are coal plants, then nuclear.

And now that we know the AGW theory is a fraud, we can get back to sanity and put the economy back on track using real energy sources, not fairy-tale sources like wind and solar.

Picture the existing city of Las Vegas. Now picture it 40 times larger, and all but 1/40th of that surface area is nothing but solar panels. Nobody would want to go there, since the casinos would have all gone out of business from spending all their money on solar panels.

  10. Bella says:

I doubt it could just yet but I think that is a fabulous idea for the future and I couldn’t agree more that those casinos could definitely afford it. I wonder if they have ever considered it.

    yes..
in actual fact. the whole worlds energy needs could be catered for with 1% of all suns energy that hits earth.
