Going Green
Going Green means living within a balance that must exist between you and your environment. It means to minimize your impact on the earth, and offset or even eliminate your use of nonrenewable resources. It’s simply unrealistic to expect our species to go on consuming as we currently do indefinitely with no repercussions. Fortunately, the sun showers our planet with more energy every day than we use in a year, but to make that power usable we need to convert it to electric current. For most of our history, electric conversion has been turbine based. Solar panels however, dont utilize a turbine at all. Instead, sunlight strikes silicon crystals and creates electric potential. This potential can be harnessed to create a current. Through a century of advancement, solar panels can produce a return of more than 30% of the power they receive. Manufacturing advancements have lowered the cost to where panels can pay for themselves in only six years. This means that solar power is finally economically viable, since panels are designed to run at least 10 years before they start to break down. Grid-tie systems allow you to feed excess power back into the grid and utilities are required to pay you for it. Today, rebate incentives like The California Solar Initiative make solar power more affordable than ever.
