HomeGrown Solar and Wind Power Update

Here is a short update about our system here in North Dakota, We have added two 190 watt Evergreen solar panels this summer, changed out 8 new marine trolling batteries 125AH from walmart $80 “ten total”. cleaned up some wiring in conduit and customizes some meter boxes along with some changes on our sub panel wiring. Currently in the winter we run 80% of the lights and that’s all we dropped 2 bedrooms and the living room since we have reduced power input. Other than that we have been going really outstandingly good in the summer and so so in the winter here just holding our own. Summer of 09 as soon as we get income tax back we are going to buy 2 210watt evergreen panels and have been looking into a really cool 12 – 28vdc grid tie inverter we want to buy one and play with that also. www.buyerisland.net

How are your batteries holding out now after a couple of years have passed? Are they still holding a good charge? Thanks for the videos!

    I have one question :)
is your stop switches for the turbines hooked up to the dc side of the turbine
i cant find a heavey enough switch the 25 amp ones seem so chincy lol trying to hook up 6 gauge wire to them doesnt make sence to me

I love your solar setup. I have been watching your vids for a long time now. i watch them over and over to catch all the details. The updates were great as well. Can you do another video on your solar equipment? Have you added any more panels recently? I will keep looking for new updates. Thanks for posting those videos they were an inspiration for me. I will make a video of my setup and post it as well. Never made a youtube before so i’m long over due. Thanks again.

@RCEbooks He built SOLAR to SUPPLEMENT his WIND system you f-ing MORON. Jesus. I lived in Minot and trust me, the sun shines for more than 3 months a year you knob.

@RCEbooks You have got to be the biggest idiot to post on this mans channel. Please give your interwebz back to Al Gore and stop breathing my air.

    Awesome Setup.

  9. RCEbooks says:

Forget about whose bashing what: He built a SOLAR system in a region that is only suited to wind power! That state gets 7 mos. a year of little sunlight and for $400 or less: A simple wind power system could have been setup using automotice alternator batteries. Brushing snow off of panels, isn’t it obvious the guy didn’t think it through???

  10. mrbuki77 says:

Where did you get the manual transfer switch from? By the way you have a great looking system. And anyone trying to bash it, is just jealous. Later from sunny FL

  11. mrbuki77 says:

First, are you a banker or an insurance agent? I am an insurance adjuster and agent. And the ins. co. will not drop you b/c of solar power. They may at worst increase the premium if you are not compliant with electrical code. I also deal with bank underwriting, and the mortgage has to go into default for them to begin to foreclose. I’m not sure what you have against solar, but if you dislike it that much, you should stop watching those type of vids. And find something else.

  12. RCEbooks says:

About 6 mailorder brides from Vietnam’s worth, that’s how much he invested!

  13. RCEbooks says:

It looks like good wiring but Don’t let your mortgage bank SEE your work in the basement or they will put you into immediate foreclosure. The mortgage insurance would STOP immediately also. Are you a licensed electrician?

  14. RCEbooks says:

You are a RIOT! “I added this 12v outlet for my 6-can mini fridge”…. yeah, while it’s -20 to -40 outside… why the HELL do you need a fridge? If you had ANY brains whatsoever: You’d take your electrical skills down south or out to CA and farm yourself out for 40k/job! Seriously, WAKE UP and stop having sex with your aunt down the block!

  15. RCEbooks says:

You can always tell a North Dakotan: They inhale their O’s while talking! “You betcha”!

  16. youalreadykno2000 says:

i would like to know what type of transfer swtch do you have? and how do you know what type to use?

  17. knockxobile says:

The grid-tie inverters are quite expensive from what I have seen. also, curious as to how much your 190w panel was for ya.

  18. TheUnNerved says:

As I recall it was windy in Minot 364 days out of the year :)

Great vids, are you completely off grid or are you supplementing?

  19. TheDudeRulez09 says:

we bought 2-210 amp hour deep cycle 6vdc golf cart batt’s from Sam’s (Walmart) for $68 each, we will be banking 8 of these in parallel for 48vdc total, right now we charge with a mini 2 stroke genset with a 12vdc out to charge once we get about that we will charge in sets of 2 til we get the solar panels set.

  20. nasanction says:

How much have you invested to get to this point?

I will soon have our homestead and will start converting to 12 volt to eventually exit the grid. ;)

  21. gggatttorrr says:

So the trimetric counts all the power you have made total until you reset it ? About how much does one of them cost ? thanks

  23. HomeDistiller says:

    very nice setup

  24. shonerboner says:

The battries from walmart are the Everstart Maxx Marine 125AH, They are not full deep cycle but for the price they have been working great for a year in Jan. Last priced $80

  25. vudumojo says:

    Cool.
    The Walmart batteries?
    What am I buying exactly?
    Thank you!
