Solar Powered Boat Travels The World.
Solar On The Seas Departing from Monaco, France on Sept. 28th of 2010, the “Planet Solar” embarked on a very special voyage: this is the first boat capable of traveling the world using renewable energy. Planet Solar is a Catamaran shaped boat powered entirely by solar energy, generated by it’s own solar surfaces. Built at the Knierim Yacht Club in Kiel in northern Germany, the Planet Solar weighs 60 tons and measures 100 x 50 feet. She can go for 3 days on the battery. It is capable of speeds up to about 15 nautical miles per hour. At the time of this writing, July 2011, the trip is about halfway completed as the vessel approaches The Philippines. They plan to arrive back in Monaco in April of 2012. The key aim of the project is to demonstrate what can be achieved with today’s renewable energy technologies and inspire others on a path towards carbon-reduction. “Each step in the PlanetSolar project is a step further in the technological development of renewable energy sources. Thanks to ambitious projects like this scientific research is making progress,” said owner Immo Ströher. –Bibi Farber This video was produced by NTDTV uploaded from next world tv special thanks to NTDTV FULL CREDITS ARE ATTRIBUTED TO THE ORIGINAL CREATERS AND/OR UPLOADER/S OF THIS VIDEO. Maybe one day someone will invent a boat that uses wind power…
Very practical NOT! Nice if you have several million in the bank to buy a super yacht with a deck the size of a football field to power the thing, you cant even sunbath or fish on that thing, couldn’t they prove solar power by some more practicable means?

Why am I such a picky naysayer? This is very cool and all, but it is not fossil fuel free. It looks as though it is made of plastics and composites. Also, the fact that it can go three days without a sunlight recharge is great, but if they run into a bad storm, they may find a need for a diesel engine. I wish them well, but I also hope that they don’t only show the good parts of their experiment. As we get close to a very real need for alternative energy, we need honest evaluation.
