World’s Largest Solar Powered Boat To Begin World Voyage
World’s Largest Solar Powered Boat To Begin World Voyage monday 27th september 2010 Monaco — It’s anchors away for what is being heralded as the world’s largest solar powered boat. The state-of-the-art catamaran, was launched in Monaco on Monday, and boasts of approximately 540 square meters decked with photovoltaic modules. The vessel was the dream of the German entrepreneur Immo Stroeher and Swiss project founder, Raphael Domjan and it’s reality. They’re taking it on a record-breaking round-the-world trip to show that solar power is a viable source of energy for transport. Special batteries on board allow the boat to sail for about three days without fresh solar power. The 60 ton ship, named ‘Planet Solar’, spent fourteen months under construction in Kiel, Germany, before being launched into the Mediterranean this week under the Swiss flag. It cost ten million euros. According to the German shipbuilders, the vessel should be able to reach speeds of up to 15 knots. The crew of six hope to make it around the world in 160 days, all of them fossil-fuel free. Weather and nautical conditions permitting, the catamaran will stop in Miami, Cancun, San Francisco, Sydney, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi.

Let me get this straight, 10 million dollars for a 60 ton ship that’s only viable cargo is 6 human beings? And… it craps out after 3 days if you encounter cloudy weather. Now here comes the doozie of all dip eco-comments “solar power is a viable source of energy for transport” Yea, I am sure some transport company will spend 10 million dollars to kinda…sorta… kinda transport less than one shipping container. Sounds VIABLE to me. Of course sailing ships worked in 1502 at 1/500th cost.
Wait until the first big storm.. then you’ve got a $200,000 repair bill on solar panels o.O
@mageac But not SOLELY from the rotation..
@madjimms the pressure differences move because of the rotation of the earth, other wise the wind would be like tides
@mageac The sun heats up the water to create pressure changes in the atmosphere
@mageac I hope this was sarcastic
@Kukenango the rotation of the earth
@mageac and what creates wind?
@Kukenango sails use wind energy… not solar…:S
both would be a pretty sweet set up

Sails also use solar energy and have been arround for centuries!
does it run on moon power?
excellent do this kind for the commercial liners also

Gentleman,
.
What an adventure, makes my 4.7 PV system look like a flea in the grass of my front yard compared to your sea going, global trekking PV system.
.
Best wishes Mr. Domjan and Mr. d’Aboville for a successful, save n fun journey.
