My parents have a peice of furniture that is wood and was shellacked. It’s shiny.?

My parents tried to paint it white (with regular wall paint I guess) and the paint is peeling off. They don’t want to go through the trouble of sanding the shiny stuff off and refinishing it.

Is there any paint that paints over shellacked shiny finishes?

I saw a commercial for a spray paint that goes over plastic (like patio furniture) and I suggested that to them but I’m not really sure that won’t peel off either. Plus it might be expensive because they’ll probably need a lot of spray cans.

Does anyone know about painting over an already shellacked piece of furniture?

Use denatured alcohol and the shellac will dissolve. You may also wish to use mineral spirits to clean the surface and then do a light sanding. I’d go with an oil based paint to complete the project.
