    @rpeek
just strip inside out and smarten it up; just waxoyl the chassis after welding any patches on, dot take the whole back off it will probably fall apart!
fit a toyota 2.4 diesel engine out of a hylux.

You guys are great-I laughed out loud! Such a fun video. I am surprised that people let a beautiful camper go to ‘pot.’ Maybe, they were on ‘pot.’. Anyway, its a great project camper-have fun!

i bought a 75 chinook recently. to access the pop top u stand inside and push on handles, ( i guess yours are missing.) there is a scissor lift on the sides to lift it. most i’ve read or seen have good vinyl tenting up there.

    That’s a familiar sight—I have a ’78, but not a camper. Sounds really good!

    Love it man, good luck.

  10. rpeek says:

@FOXDIEALIVE Thanks for that. We’re looking forward to getting to work on this one.. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to save the camper or not, but even as a truck it’s an awesome little ride..

@Seattlecarnut Oh yes. I’ll video everything. And I will get too it.

  12. Seattlecarnut says:

@rpeek If you do, I’d love to see it posted. I love seeing old Toyotas given new life.

  13. Seattlecarnut says:

@rpeek Our truck was a rusted old wreck of a truck by the time my cousin took it over, but it ran good and could be driven indefinitely. It was my favourite vehicle to drive.

  14. rpeek says:

@Seattlecarnut Haven’t had a chance to work on it yet, got a new master cylinder to go in it, but no time to do anything with it yet, but I’ll get to it..

  15. rpeek says:

@Seattlecarnut When I first came to Maine I bought a very rusted out old Toyota car, I think it might have been a ’78.. Corolla? Rusted so bad you could see the road go by underneath, but man that thing ran great. I loved driving it. Been thinkin’ for some time I’d like to fine an old Toyota truck to fix up, then turns out my neighbor wanted to sell this one, so I picked it up.

  16. Seattlecarnut says:

@rpeek I used to drive a Toyota pickup truck, the same year as this camper. Unfortunately, my cousin took it over. Damn! I loved driving it.

  17. rpeek says:

@Seattlecarnut Yea, I know. At the time I didn’t have a place to park it, and had to let it go, but have often wished I had the chance to buy it back or find another one. It was a cool old truck.

  18. Seattlecarnut says:

@rpeek It’s too bad you didn’t. As slow as they may be, they get better fuel economy than a 4×4 with gasoline engine.

  19. rpeek says:

@Seattlecarnut I had a diesel in a 4wd pickup. an ’85. Slow as the devil, but I stilled liked it. Often wish I’d kept it.

  20. Seattlecarnut says:

@rpeek Indeed it would’ve been cheaper and easier. If I had something like that, I would’ve done one of a lot of things: I would’ve taken the camper apart and have someone make a new camper out of it. Either that, or I would’ve taken the camper off and had someone make something like a pickup bed, except instead of just having the tailgate open up, the sides would come down, making a flat bed. I’d also have someone put a diesel engine under the hood.

  21. Seattlecarnut says:

@rpeek A flatbed truck would’ve been cool. I was hoping to inherit my stepdad’s 78 truck when he passed away, and tear the bed out and have a new bed put in its place. I’ve always liked old Toyotas.

  22. rpeek says:

@Seattlecarnut I was originally planning on pulling the camper off and making a little flat bed truck out of it, but Trish wanted to restore the camper. I’m thinking it’d be cheaper to find a camper in better shape. Not sure which way it’s going to go yet, but either way we’ll have some fun with it.

  23. Seattlecarnut says:

@rpeek What were you planning to do with this rig? Were you going to tear apart the camper part and make another camper with it? I know that’s what I would’ve done.

  24. rpeek says:

@Seattlecarnut Yea, I think they are good trucks..

  25. Seattlecarnut says:

My stepdad had a 78 Toyota pickup truck. It wasn’t a Chinook camper, but it was a great truck.
