Any good camping spots in northern California?

I have never been camping and I want to try it with a few friends. I live in So Cal and I hear Nor Cal has a better camping experience… So any good experiences/suggestions? Nothing too hardcore though, my survival skills in the wilderness isn’t so vast… I don’t even have a tent yet.

  1. Mama to 2006 & 2008 says:

I just got back from Calavaras Big Trees SP and it was great – huge campsites, easy hikes, amazing scenery, fishable/swimmable rivers, and over half empty during the week. We also visited the local caverns and went spelunking – I highly recommend it!

Big Basin, Portola Redwoods, New Brighton, and Pfieffer Big Sur are all favorites, but can be crowded. They all have restrooms and running water – so none too hardcore. Look into ranger-led hikes before budget cuts take them away.
