There are so many places it’s impossible to list them. So your first step is to contact the Appalachian Mountain Club, and see what’s available from them. They have trail guides, books, and other data that will help your research.
Were it me, I’d make a beeline to Mount Washington and the Presidential Range of mountains. There are all sorts of possibilities there. Not to mention some great fishing in the Mount Washington Valley.
Another possibility is the White Mountains, where, among other things you can do a hut-to-hut hike, and not even worry about a carrying a tent.
Equally distant from you, however, are the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. There, too, you’ll find an abundance of hiking trails. And you have the scenic climaxes of the High Peaks—forty mountains each of which is more than 4,000 feet high.
I’m not sure if you want to backpack, or car (or bicycle) camp. I agree that the AMC is a great resource. Some car camping areas you might consider are Lafayette Campground in Franconia Notch, and Wild River in Evans Notch. Wild River is a favorite of mine. It would be farther for you, but is in a more remote area than most car camping areas, and there are many beautiful hikes that you can do from there.

Here’s the contact for AMC:
Definitely the Adirondacks!
