Christian camp retreat attacked by bears?

A few years back this story came out about a christian retreat in the Pennsylvania wilderness where several black bears attacked and kill 3 kids and 2 chaperons, the only surviving kid admitted he was a closet atheist. But my question was do you think god was trying to send some kind of message or was this completely random?
