Does Anyone Else Think That Disney Channel Is A Bad Influence For Kids?

I am 13 and I have been watching Disney Channel for a long time. As I got older I started to notice that Disney was sending bad messages to kids. If you go back to the early 2000′s, shows and movies actually had morals to them. They would teach children about spending time with family, being nice to others, etc. Nowadays, every show is about becoming a celebrity. Seriously every show, Shake It Up, Hannah Montana, Sonny With A Chance, A.N.T. Farm. Then movies like Lemonade Mouth, Camp Rock, Starstruck, etc. The old Disney shows like Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens were about your average American families.

Also shows make disrespectful comments sound funny. For example character A may say something like “Ugh my dad is so stupid and embarrassing!” Character B will say “Yeah I know, my dad won’t take a shower. He smells like oatmeal.” *laugh track* This is teaching kids to be catty and disrespectful to their parents. I guess some people think that it’s funny but I don’t. They make people look like stereotypes on these shows to be funny. Like people who like comic books, kids of other cultures\religions, they will make smart kids look like geeks, etc. The message that they are sending is that you have to fit in or else others will frame you as nerds if you do your own thing.

Disney actors\actresses are usually bad influences. When Miley Cyrus first started out on Disney I loved her. I thought that she was a young, pretty, talented, actress. But now, I can’t stand her! She is a horrible influence for little girls. Also some shows are bad too. On Jonas LA which was canceled, there was 3 boys living with 2 girls. Isn’t that a little weird?

So do you think Disney is a bad influence? Do you let your children watch Disney?

i’m not sure anymore since i haven’t watched disney channel since i was about 13 or 14. All i know is that stuff that’s on for 5-9 year olds it’s crazy and annoying. Like…wtf happened to nikelodeon? Cartoons were so good when i was growing up.

I totally agree with you! I’m 17 years old and grew up watching Disney Channel when I was younger. It was really the only ‘kid’ channel I watched back then. Now when I go and watch anything on there it’s just plain depressing. Disney got way too obsessed with the whole ‘image’ instead of the morals as you have already said.

Don’t get my wrong, my favorite place in the entire world is Disney World! :P But the Channel is just lacking any purpose whatsoever and I consider it kid garbage. DC is just pumping out the famed actors right now to make money and their forgetting the standards that Disney once was.

I also think the same about Miley. When Hannah Montana came out, it was a harmless show about a girl dealing with a crazy life and balancing it and wanting to be normal. Then over a couple years it progressed into the image factor again and Miley took it way over the top. Now she’s disrespectful, inappropriate, and immature for both her fans and elders. And it’s only encouraged by the media because she’s exactly what the tabloids want. It’s sad for me to see someone get so exploited by the media, but it’s true that it happened to her. Just like Jessica Simpson and Brittany Spears. They all had a little potential but it was exposed in the wrong way! Just… sad.

Those are just my thoughts, though. IF I had kids now I wouldn’t really support them watching Disney Channel. Watch the Discovery channel or something kids! Maybe actually learn something from it too! :P

You are not the first person I have seen with your concern as can even be seen with some of the answers here. I don’t understand why people feel that way however. I have been watching the Disney Channel since it first premiered. Recently I have seen a lot of people complain about my favorite show Hannah Montana. In just about every episode of that show, one of the people does something wrong, make a wrong choice, takes the wrong action, etc. Then before the show is over, they realize the error of their ways and make good on their choices. I.e. a positive message.

I admit I don’t pay as much attention to other shows as much as HM. But the episodes of Suite Life or Wizards that I have seen appear to be the same way.

This is really nothing new. It was the same thing in the 60′s and 70′s with all the non-Disney sitcoms I grew up with. Brady Bunch, Gilligan’s Island, Lost in Space – they all had people making wrong choices and then redeeming themselves by the end of the show. (Again I think a positive message).
