Does anyone know of a camp that accepts 17 year old counselors?

I’m going to be 17 summer 2011 and I really want to find a fun job away from the city. (i live in New York) I was thinking that a camp counselor would be perfect, but all camps seem to accept only counselors of 18 or older. If you know any camps that accept 17 year olds (or any other fun summer jobs) please let me know.. thanks!!!

Have you ever tried boy scouts? I’m pretty sure there’s a boy scouts program in New York somewhere. Good luck!
Many camps accept 17 year olds as assistant counselors, usually a volunteer unpaid position, even 14 year olds can be counselors in training (CIT), a volunteer unpaid position. Check into your local camps about those positions if you are interested in volunteer positions. Many camps will first hire ex-campers into those positions, and generally to become a counselor, they want you to have experience as an assistant counselor, unless maybe you’ve gone through college classes (child development, etc).
Find out when camp hiring is going on, because some start in February, at least in my area. My son’s friends worked as CITs last summer and they loved it, even though they weren’t getting paid.
Good luck!
Is there a YMCA or YWCA near you? They have some of the best programs for summer and “beyond” – they provide free training and it really is a great learning experience. Being a part of the YM/WCA programs is a very rewarding experience and will become a part of your future. Look into it!
