does the new yorker or new york times accept poems from teenagers to publish?

right now i want to go into the direction of getting degrees in design and writing. i have the design thing down, but i want to publish a few of my poems – i’m 14, but have been told i am a very serious writer. i want to publish two poems, both from school assignments – one about WW2 camps and the other about the destruction of the moon – sounds dark, but family and friends love them and they are my favorites. so can i publish them for new york time or new yorker, do you know of any other places that could accept these. i really want to make a portfolio of published works for high school

  1. drew says:

Wow, you have such lofty goals! One of those people who “aim for the stars.”

How refreshing, especially when so many people your age are wrapped up in trivialities and celebrity news.

I don’t want to discourage your ambitions but it is really difficult to get things in the New Yorker. I know little about the NY Times. You should send both of them a sample, and just see what happens. But at the same time look into poetry journals. Either look online or go to a large bookstore and look through the magazine rack for possible publications to investigate.

Because you say you have talent in design, you should consider bringing the two areas (poetry and design) together to create a synthesis. This could stir up some special interest, since you are actually making the appearance part of your artform.
