How do I go about taking a road trip out west from New Jersey?

I am seriously contemplating taking a road trip from New Jersey somewhere out west with a friend of mine. The thing is, I don’t want to go out TOO far, no more than a 5-6 hour drive, so I am considering making our destination a state like West Virginia, Virginia, or Maryland. I don’t want to go north, only south or west.
What I really need suggestions on is how to get to see the real “raw America”. I don’t want big cities or anything urban. If anyone knows any specific spots to pass through that are reminiscent of tumbleweed America, even things like diners, taverns, or campgrounds, places that make you feel like you need a banjo.
And the last thing is, we don’t want anything to do with motels or anything of the sort, so if anyone knows of any places that it would be acceptable to just pitch a tent for the night, and then pack it up in the morning (without going too much out of the way to find a campground designated for CAMPING), suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ANY SUGGESTIONS at all concerning this road trip will be very very VERY much appreciated.

Thank a bunch, guys!

Go to Joplin, MO. You won’t find many motels there, or anything else for that matter.

If you are near Central NJ Take I-78 west to the Allentown PA area Take route 309 north to Wilkes Barre There are 2 overpasses one right after the other and a street that runs between them. This street becomes a 2 lane road. Follow it for a little over 1 and a half hours you will arrive at Rickett’s Glen State Park. It’s highlights are a mountaintop lake and a 6 mile trail that is far more difficult than it seems on the map. Its is 1.8 miles down the mountainside 2.2 miles up and 2 miles across the ridge If you decide to walk it the opposite way you will have walked over 5 and a half miles and the face a vertical incline of 125 feet or so in a very short distance

Oh yeah there are over 30 waterfalls also ranging from 20 some to 95 feet.

I go as often as I can and so will you.
