First, if you are looking for a camp that improves her reading, there are not many out there. I suggest that you give her things to read: (Newspaper for example) Then have her write down the vocabulary she doesn’t understand or cannot pronounce. Have her study the vocabulary until she becomes a master at those words. Then have her read the passage again with the vocabulary she studied. Also if she keeps up her reading, she should get better because, now she can better reconize words she has read before.
I am not sure about Michigan, but here in Florida we send home flyers with the students listing different camps. Ask your daughter if she has recieved any flyers from her teachers or if she has noticed any flyers posted in the school.
Instead of a camp, could you look into a course or two that might be offered by her school or another school near by? it is hard on the self esteem of a tenth grader to be sent to reading camp. A private tutor might be another option, perhaps a college student majoring in education. Be creative and keep your daughter’s self esteem in mind. Don’t try to do this yourself; you are too close to the situation.
i doubt you would sit round and read at a summer camp.. try to find things she interested in. if she likes music, look for biographries and stuff. i never read a book at school. i found autobiographies and have read heaps now…or get her magazines…
Actually there are summer camps out there which include daily tutoring for kids in many different subject areas. I work for one such camp in Pennsylvania. Try searching the American Camping Association website at http://www.acacamps.com you can search by location and many other features. You’ll have to check out each camps website as they should list if they offer tutoring as well if not call the camp and ask. I think camp would be better since your daughter would get to enjoy many other activities rather than feel like she is doing summer school.
