My family camps a lot but not in camp grounds. So my advice is only for dry camping. We are in Middleton and travel Highway 95 to the McCall area.
Normally, by mid-July we’ll be at Squaw Meadows which is 20 miles north of McCall on the Warren Wagon Road. However, it’s too early to go there right now because of the wet winter and spring. A scout that went up earlier this week says Squaw Meadows is like a lake and there is still snow along the roads. Instead of 95, we’ll head north on 55.
We have started out at Herrick Reservoir which is off Highway 55. Then will go north around Cascade to an area south of Warm Lake, on the Salmon River. After that, it’ll be warm and dry enough to go to Squaw Meadows. Herrick is good for fishing, horseback riding (you have to bring your own horses) and hiking. In mid-summer on the Salmon River it’s possible to see Salmon that have come back from the ocean to spawn–I saw two and it was absolutely awesome!
If camping in the McCall area, it’s a nice break to go into town for an afternoon of swimming, shopping, an ice cream cone. There’s lots for kids to do.
Take your bug spray where ever you go. I’d like to help if you need more information.
