the pop up trailer is old (1977) the previous owner can’t find the registration and i have a notarized letter handing ownership over to me. but because the vin is not coming up in the system dmv won’t let me register it.
this is in New Jersey, I am told the trailer is old, and never had a title. that’s just the way trailers go. I have a paper with the vin from the trailer, from the prev. owner, and notarized, but dmv can’t find the vin, therefore won’t register it. they are willing to, it’s just the vin is not in their system

WHAT STATE!!!???Most DMV people are idiots. Let us know what state, there is a way to get this titled…
He gave you the title when you bought it. The title has a VIN on it, which should match the trailer. If it doesn’t, get your money back because you have been defrauded.
You don’t sell vehicles or trailers by letters or bills of sale, you sell them by titles. So READ the title. Actually you should have checked that before the sale, and you wouldn’t be in this mess now if you had.
It would help to know what state you are dealing with. If after exhaustinjg all the possibilities you are still unable to register it for use, I would see if the owner would refund your money. Them not being able to find the registration has nothing to do with the actual transfer of ownership. That is done by transfer of title. If they cannot find the title they should be able to sign a notarized form at the DMV to transfer ownership to you. I would get together with them and take a trip to the closest DMV with any paperwork you may have.
I’m not sure why New Jersey needs to locate a VIN in their system, because everything you have should work to title it. Is it possible to register the camper in another state?
