I worked a summer camp in a different state, do I have to fill out a state return for that state?

I lived in Indiana from 1/08 – 5/08. Then I went to Michigan to work at a youth summer camp – where I stayed from 5/08 – 8/08. Then I came back to indiana for the rest of the year. Michigan and Indiana have a reciprocal agreement – I’m not sure if that means anything. Do I need to file a state return in Michigan as well as Indiana?

If your income was high enough or you had state withholding, yes on both questions.
Yes a Michigan non-resident return is due. See their website for department of revenue.
Dear Ben: All income is reported to the IRS. Indiana is your tax home and a resident return will be used for Indiana. Michigan will require a non-resident return(NR). Check the bottom of your W2 for the state with holding information.

It depends on how much you earned at the Michigan summer camp.
If you earned less than $3,500 from the summer camp, then you don’t have to file a Michigan return because you earned less than your exemption amount.
But, if you had Michigan tax withheld from your paycheck, you might want to file anyway. That’s because you might be able to get a refund of the Michigan tax you paid.
