I’m moving to Washington state pretty soon, how to cope with things? Please give me all the advice you can!?
Well, I’m moving to Washington State from Alabama this fall to start college pretty soon.
I already kinda know what to expect as it terms of weather
“well you have rain in the morning, and then some slight drizzle in the noon, oh and then more rain.”
haha, thats what I’ve been told.
I also know that it get brutally cold in WA. but i am originally from Salt Lake City, Utah and I visit my cousins every year in Canada so, needless to say, I am no stranger to the cold and I can deal just fine
I’ve also heard that Washington is more of a ‘blue’ state which is fine by me since I stray more on the liberal side but I consider myself more of the Independent party. So are people fairly friendly about politics here? Cause I know in some places here in the south, you’re either conservative or in a mental ward at the hospital haha!
Anyways, I really need advice on how to deal with culture shock, cause I’m sure it is inevitable.
I mean, I am positive that I can cope just fine seeing as Washington is so outdoorsy (which I really like cause I’m an outdoor person, I love hiking and extreme camping, etc) and Washington is known for its music scene, which, music is one of my most burning passions.
So, if any of you guys have advice as a jumping off point to adjust to the culture shock, that would be great!
Like any clothing tips that would help survive those devastating winters or to deal with lack of sunshine, how to blend in with the locals, the DOs and DONTs of living in WA. Anything would be great.
PS: I am specifically moving to Tacoma to live on Campus at my college.

Here are 5 easy steps to fit in any where you go \o/
1. Find a hobby, something like worshiping the God of chaos Nurgle.
2. Offer sacrifices to Nurgle and conquer worlds for him.
3. Kill anything that gets in you r way!!!
4. All hail Nurlge.
5. ? Ok, there are actually 4 easy steps, sorry about that. Still awesome advice do >:D<
Okay, I live in Washington State, and have for 13 years. I’ll give you the dets;)
People: Pretty darn cold. They are the kind of people that will never tell you that they hate you, but secretly go behind your back. On the outside they seem nice, but don’t trust them. Find one good friend that is trustworthy. Most of mine moved here from different states! Also, some areas are extremely republican, but over all, it is mostly a democratic state.
Clothing: Although everyone says Washington always rains, that isn’t the case. The Summer’s are incredibly AMAZING the weather is perfect and beautiful in the Summer. But as for clothes, everyone dresses CASUAL here, jeans and a tee is the regular style. So don’t buy fancy clothing.
How to blend in: Don’t be ”too” outgoing, but be nice! And hang around people that seem warm and friendly. and DO not be ”annoying” like pestering, etc. I learned that the hard way.
I live in Seattle and sure we have rain no doubt, but we have nice weather also. It doesn’t get brutally cold in winter and snow fall isn’t all that much. We have a great cultural mix. Lots of outdoors stuff to do for sure! The music scene is GREAT! Men will love your southern accent for sure! My ex-wife moved here from Mobile,AL and she loves it here. Political climate here is all over the board!!! Clothing suggestions- layers!!! Welcome to the Evergreen State!
i lived there almost my whole life and the weather can be very gloomy because of the rain. it can continue for a few days or so but washington does eventually get some sunshine. thankfully, because of so much rain, the nature is breathtaking! usually, it doesn’t get very hot during the summer but sometimes it can reach 100 Farenheit. During the winter, it doesn’t always snow and i don’t really think it can get “brutally cold”. I lived mostly in the suburbs where the neighbors are very nice and sweet. you may even get some welcome gifts or just friendly visitors
for clothing, its not very important because everyone dresses like every other american ( shirts, jeans etc.) but make sure to have warm clothes for the winter and SKI suits just in case you take a trip to the nearby mountains Mt. Hood and Mt. Saint Helens. have some rain boots and rain jackets for those rainy days.
basically, i think you will fit in perfectly because i don’t think salt lake city is that different from washington and i wish you best of luck!
