I’m Planning On Moving To New York City?

I’m from California; I’ve done my share of travelling, I’m 21. I’ve never had any interest in New York before I visited; I worked at a summer camp upstate, was basically talked into going one weekend, and fell in love.I went back every single weekend until I flew home. Now I know it’s expensive. I know that a lot of people make the move, only to return home less than a year later. I found a couple of articles and I get that it’s difficult. I don’t really care. I don’t like where I live, and if I move it should be to someplace I like. And as a person who never bought into the image NYC has, I LOVE New York. What helpful tips might you have? Are there any resources I might find helpful? This is something that I really want to do.
To be clear, I have stayed in a hostel and taken in the sites before. When working in Upstate New York in Summer 2007, I spent almost every weekend in the city; I have been pretty much all over Manhattan, to parts of Queens, and to Staten Island. I hear Brooklyn is the more affordable place to live right now? I already know the city fairly well, and my enjoyment of it a little more extensive than the typical “Times Square is nice!” and “look all all the pretty lights!” tourist mentality. One huge issue for me is, since I’m still in school, would like to eventually continue my education, but don’t have a degree right now, what are some good places to look for jobs? “It’s going to be hard to find a job, don’t move yet” isn’t really helpful; operating under the impression that I’m moving no matter what, or let’s say I already live in New York and my whole family just died and now I need a job and my own place, where do I look? Links to websites would be cool too.

First I would suggest you find a job and an affordable place to stay before you just up and move. You may also want to try staying at a hostel and taking in the sites and culture a little more in depth before you decide to make it permanent. They say if you can make it here you can make it anywhere, so good luck with your endeavors.

Would suggest Astoria Queens. Rents are more affordable and close to subways & buses. Also get a job lined up. Also try New Jersey cheaper place to live and near NYC. Try Roberthalf.com A temp agency. There is a office next to Grand Central Station.
    Also use
mta.info & hopstop.com to help you get around.
    good luck.

Try reading the NY Post, it is availale on line, and at most large news stands around the country. You can scan the classifieds and get some idea as to what type of work is available for short time, i.e. security job. This will give you time to explore other jobs after you arrive. I would suggest a room mate…Try Kew Gardens Apts. in Queens. Pretty reasonable.
