Is hitch-hiking safe? How can I travel cheaply around the U.S?

I’m working in a summer camp in Maine this summer and would like to travel around the U.S for just under four weeks afterwards. I’m from England and have never been to the U.S before, don’t mind too much/know where I wanna go really. I will probably be travelling with the people I meet at camp for a bit but will be doing some independent travelling.
However i’m doing this on a seriously tight budget, I will be paid about $1,215 at the end of camp and can’t really add much money to this.

Would like to ask how safe hitch-hiking would be? I’m a 21 year old 5ft tall female so I guess i’d look pretty vulnerable. But i’ve been looking at the cost of coaches and things and it all looks a bit more expensive than I thought.

Any tips on how to do things on the cheap, find cheap places to stay etc would be greatly appreciated :)
I’ve only travelled in India and Thailand before so I guess thats why everything seems so expensive lol.

Um, hitchhiking isn’t safe at all, especially not for a woman. There’s no telling what sick weirdos would pick you up…
You might be better renting a car, or going with a friend or something.

Don’t even think about hitch hiking, especially as a female
