Is the summer heat in Dallas bearable (swedish family visiting)?
So my dad has a business meeting next week in Dallas and my mother, my two brothers and I are also going since we are on holiday and have only been once in the US (New York in 2007). We are arriving this Saturday 21st of August and staying till Thursday 2nd of September and are all very much looking forward to the visit and might rent a car and also travel a bit around Texas. Yet what scares me is that I read a lot about the unbearable summer heat in Dallas and even our guide advises to avoid June, July and August!
Since we are from Sweden, where it snows almost half of the year, we are not used to extremely hot weather. Therefore I am a bit worried if my family and I can bear the heat and if we can even do any long trips outside the hotel.
So how hot does it really get in Dallas in August? Is the heat still bearable? Are long car trips during the day even possible? And do all hotels, shopping centers etc. have air-conditioning?
P.S. I don’t want to sound ignorant but being from northern europe I really have no idea! Thanks for your answers and excuse my not so good english =)

I would not do a road trip. It is hot and being in a car all day while your in texas sounds lame! Go to the lake! or a ballgame! There are tons of lakes in Texas and that’s what almost all locals do. And at the Ballpark in Arlington there is the cruevo club spend the money on those tickets get some margaritas and enjoy the rangers beating the snot out of who ever they play. Last but not least Six Flags over Texas is nto a bad place to go hang out. Also at night go get some Mexican food in Up Town and just stay the night down there you will have plenty of fun!
It’s hot and humid. Imagine steam sauna. Any hotels, cars, restaurants etc. will all be air conditioned. You will only experience the heat when you go outside.
If you were to go to a Texas Rangers (currently in first place in their division by the way) baseball game – as suggested – that would be outside.
Texas is a big place, don’t plan on seeing a lot of the state unless you plan on taking some long trips. For example, San Antonio is 5 hours away by car.
Unlike Europe here every place is air conditioned.
The heat and humidity is going to be a problem for you, but since you are not going to be outside except when going from the car to inside or inside to the car, it will be okay.
It will take a few hours to get places, but we are used to long car drives, or there are many things to see in Dallas and Fort Worth.
Long car trips are possible since cars are air conditioned.
The people are mostly friendly and should help you with directions if needed.
Dallas is very hot in August. It’s been over 100 every day this month, sometimes up to 106. I’m sure that will be awful for someone coming from a cool place, but hotels, stores, restaurants, cars, theaters, virtually every place is air conditioned here – even our schools. Since all cars have air conditioning you could certainly take a road trip Enjoy your stay.
It is HOT in Dallas. Temperatures have been over 100 F (37C) for several weeks. This CAN be brutal if you are not used to it. ALL hotels, restaurants, shopping centers have AC. Make sure your rental car has an AC (I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t though.) But on top of the heat, the humidity is very high also. This makes it difficult to sweat and cool yourself down.
You will need to drink a LOT of water every day. Don’t leave your hotel without a cooler or several bottles of water. Dress lightly and bring sunscreen! If you can, stay indoors between 2 and 6 pm each day, when the temps are the highest. Drive in the morning, plan indoor or ‘wet’ (swimming/water parks/lakes etc) activities for the hottest part of the day.
OMG this summer has been ridiculous even for me and I’ve lived here my entire life! Coming from Sweden, i have no idea how you’re gonna be able to deal with it but there’s a first time for everything, right?? As long as the place you’re staying at has decent air conditioning, you should be fine… But sometimes just walking from the car to a building causes me to have to wipe my brow because the heat will make you sweat like craaazy here! You’ll get used to it, enjoy Dallas!
