Looking for free camping/living in California?

My friend and I are planning on flying out of New Jersey to California (the bay area) for a few weeks this summer. This is being done very much on a whim and we are looking for places to stay. We thought camping would be ideal but most of the sights in the area are very pricey and we are looking to live with the minimum. We plan on shipping some bikes out there (if anyone has any suggestions on the cheapest way to do that it would also be appreciated) and just biking around to where ever we feel while we are out there. If anyone has any suggestions or solutions to these problems it will be much appreciated, and thanks so much!

you can rent bikes cheap in the beach area, and you can camp around the parks, enjoy.
You cant bike on the freeways so you have to bike in the hills or in rural areas. Look at the National Parks website for camping locations nearest to the bay area. If it is possible to bike up Hwy 1 along the coast from Stinson Beach to the redwoods that would be nice or down Hwy 1 from Pacifica to Santa Cruz. I dont know about camping. The website can tell you. I dont think anything is free in Calif.
