My fiance leaves for basic training in September – How should I go about taking care of his finances?

My fiance and I plan on marrying before he leaves for Marine boot camp on September 20th. How long does it take to acquire a marriage license in the state of Kentucky? And after we marry (via JOP) what other things will we have to take care of before he leaves so that I’ll be able to take care of his finances while he’s gone? Thanks for your input.

Get married
Set up a joint bank account (as well as) you both keep one separately (don’t put all eggs in one basket)
Get your military dependent ID card for medical, shopping, etc.
Change your name on credentials (social security card, drivers license, bank accounts, etc.)
He can give you power of attorney
Note: If I were him I would have my check go directly to my personal account, and then transfer a specific amount each month to the joint account for household expenses.
Here in California, on the day you go to court to get married is the day you get your marriage license. Make sure to bring your birth certificates. Then you can go get your military dependent ID. Make sure all the cars you own have a military sticker for base access. You will need powers of attorney (both general AND special for banking, autos, etc….). Don’t forget his last will (not so nice to think about but necessary). My husband’s command actually gave everyone a whole list of things to get done with the JAG, make sure his command and the ombudsman has your contact info and you have theirs. When my husband left last time, none of the businesses (utilities, credit cards, cell phones etc….) was willing to talk to me until I faxed or mailed them our powers of attorney. Since then we’ve learned to have him call them before deploying to include my name and give his consent for them to talk to me about anything.
