Our dog was put to sleep in New York, why couldn’t we bring her home??
Our dog was having trouble breathing while we were camping and my dad took her to the vet. They found she had an enlarged heart and there was nothing they could do and they had to put her to sleep so she would not suffer…I realize not wanting to bring the body 6 hours on a drive home, but why wouldn’t they offer her ashes or something to us?? Is there a law or something that doesn’t allow that? Please help!

The vet doesnt do cremation services. If you wanted that done, you would have had to take the body home and find a service that does that.
usually you have to specifically request to have her cremated. i am sure a good crematorium would have shipped her ashes to you.
i am so sorry for your loss. it’s never easy losing a beloved pet.
yeah thats not done by vets, in most cases owners know when they are putting their pets down so they have time to arrange cremation services.
it sounds like your vet just didnt have the options available. When i put my dog to sleep i was given an entire document asking what i would like done with the body. single cremation (just your dog’s ashes) mass cremation (your dog with a bunch of other dogs, so your getting some ofyour dogs ashes and a bunch of others) Single burial (one dog, one grave) Mass burial ( large grave dug and hundreds of dogs thrown in) and lastly for people who cant afford anything…a choice of “the dump” we paid the extra money for the single cremation.
sorry for your loss. its a real shame the vet you took your dog to didnt tell you these options or have them available.
You should have had her cremated where you were. Without proper permits you cannot take a dead body of a pet over state lines. It is considered a Bio-Hazard. Transporting her ashes would have been fine.
Ironically her body was cremated anyhow with dozens of other animals.
Having her cremated so that you only got her ashes would have been expensive.
I’m very sorry for your loss and telling you the cold, hard truth.
Just remember her fondly and don’t hold it against your Dad.
I am so sorry to hear about your baby. Our vet did our baby and we even got to pick out the urn and everything, but it does cost. They won’t do it for free so they couldn’t just do it for you. You have to ask for them to do the cremation.
It cost me around $260.00 and i got him back in 2 days cause i took him in on a sunday. I didn’t have him euthanized so that price is not included. I picked him up at my vets office. He said that i am guaranteed to get my dog back cause they have to weigh it and all these other laws that they now have (at least where i live). Anyway my baby was tiny so if your baby was big then it would cost more. You should call them and see if they still have your dog and if they do then ask to have him cremated and also ask if they will send him in the mail to you. I wish you the best of luck!
I’m sorry for your loss. I know how your mind must be racing right wondering what happened to her and I can tell what they do, it was explained to me by my vet.
They put the dog in a freezer and keep her there until the cremation service comes to pick up all the animals that had to be put down since their last pick up.
If the family requested a private cremation and ashes returned to them, it takes about 2 weeks and will cost in the $350 range (on top of euthanasia fee), ashes will be delivered by mail.
If they didn’t request, then the animal is cremated with the rest of them. The cost of the group cremation is included in the fee to have them put down.
I can vouch for the truth in this story. I went to pick up a family member’s cat the day after she was put down (they didn’t know I was coming, I just showed up and asked for the body because we were burying her in the family’s pet cemetery – we live in the country, it’s legal). She was frozen when they brought her to me. She was in a sleeping cat position and wrapped in a towel, they treat them with respect even after they pass.
I’m very sorry for your loss !! sometimes it seems that even pet professionals can be insensitive . options would have been nice !
