Travelling in America for 5 weeks?

Hi
My family and I are going to travel around America for 5-6 weeks around June-July.
We would like to visit west America (Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Montana, California ect..) and New York, and possibly Washington D.C.
The only problem is that we have nothing planned yet, we don’t know where to go, what to visit, how to travel (camping car, plane, bus, train ? )
Can you give us some ideas, information and tips ???
Thank you =)

Hello!
If you are going to go to the west there are a ton of campsites that are just beautiful. Camping would be nice out there. Car is probably the best way to do a lot of traveling, or rent an RV. Planes are too expensive and there aren’t really good rail systems here. Buses are too slow and not comfortable.
Look up National Parks and try to stay in those if you want to camp, they are safest and usually are maintained to entertain. Go white water rafting in Colorado!
Wow, this is hard. I would suggest going up to Glenwood Springs and doing the rafting trip that goes down the Colorado river. This website looks cruddy, but I’ve used this company, so I know they are great. Also Glenwood is a great place to visit the Hot Springs pool, and to travel up to Aspen, CO. Just avoid the Ramada Inn there–it’s really crappy!

I would also suggest doing the Film on the Rocks at the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater. The 2009 schedule may not come out for a few months.
