It was farm labor… picking everything and anything grown in the Imperial, San Joaquin, and Sacramento Valleys.
The Federal Government organized some nicer camps… far nicer than those provided by most of the land-owners.
Many were fearful of the communist influences in the area and used anti-labor practices.
I’d read “The Grapes of Wrath” to get a TERRIFIC idea of the camps.
