There are several trails of varying lengths and difficulty in Ohio to choose from. But, you might be interested in the 42 mile long “Shawnee Backpacking Trail”, located in southern Ohio. The elevation changes are from 700 to 1200 feet and there are many, many ups and downs. Views of nearby ridges and hollows are plentiful and beautiful. There are 8 campsites and all but one has a water pump nearby. The camps are located in beautiful hollows and have fire rings if needed.
Head west of Portsmouth, Ohio on SR 52 and turn right onto 125. The parking for backpacking is just about a mile past the state park entrance.

There is a little known law in Ohio which allows you to pitch a tent in any Wal-Mart parking lot if you have less than .75 cents in your possession !
