New York I say anywhere north of the Adirondacks because the Adirondack park has too many rules but beware of hillbilly’s like me who shoot people for trespassing jk lots of “state Forrest” ‘public land’ to camp on
upstate ny has a lot of nice secluded places in and around the adirondaks, my method is to get a map and look for blank spots in the mountains. the blank spots usually means there arent any established roads but there are always trails and campsites. then i just drive down the road that skirts the blank area and look for dirt roads and trails that lead off into the blank area. it works

Not sure of New Jersy, however I have camped and hiked the Adirondacks Mountains in upstate NY. Days go by w/o seeing people. Very Beautiful area!!!
