Where is a nice place to live in North Carolina?

I just moved to NC and I am looking for a nice mix of mountains and lakes, if not the ocean for hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, etc. However, I still want to be close enough to a city to be able to go once in a while. I don’t want to be completely out in the sticks. I currently am renting a place in South Charlotte, which is DEFINITELY not for me. I was looking at the Lake Norman area, but it seems very built up there as well. I also went to Ashville, which was nice, but not really my scene. Any suggestions?

I’ve heard Asheville is nice…. A neighbor relocated there after visiting several years in a row.
I live on the lake in Mooresville and I like it. It’s a little too country for me though. If I were you I would try Sherills Ford or Troutman. They are both about 45 mins away from Uptown Charlotte yet are close to the Mountains. From my house on the lake, I can be in Boone in about 1.5 hours, usually less than that.
= Frankly, if your jobs are in Raleigh then live in Raleigh. Raleigh itself is already spread out with a ton of different types of neighborhoods to live in. It absolutely makes no sense to waste time or gas driving from outlying sprawling suburbs. Raleigh is a nicer place to live than most of them anyways. And more homes to choose from. Just stick to Raleigh and avoid the boring suburbs…they are extremely over-rated.
South Charlotte has the lowest crime and best schools in the Charlotte area. Even with the economy as it is in most the country, the houseing market in South Charlotte is doing great. New developments, schools, and business are popping up everywhere. It is a great place to raise a family.
