old coleman presidential rv furnace. pilot wont light but I smell gas when I try. can I light it manually?

I have a 1979 prowler camper with a coleman presidential furnace. I smell gas when I try to light the pilot light so I know its getting gas to the pilot. I was wondering if I can light the pilot manually. I know this unit is obsolete and can probably not find a part to fix it. can I bypass the pilot ignitor (light it manually) and still use the heater?

“CAUTION”–DO NOT STRIKE A MATCH ANYWHERE NEAR TO WHERE THE GAS IS LOCATED BECAUSE WERE YOU TO DO SO THERE IS THE CHANCE THAT THE GAS WILL EXPLODE AND BLOW UP EVERYTHING. Open up everything so the gas can escape and then you may be able to light it manually. You may be able to find a part for it were you to look on the internet and you may be able to find it on eBay. Perhaps the furnace needs some maintenance and cleaning of the orifices at the pilot or the igniter of the pilot is also not working correctly and may need to be cleaned. You may be able to find a manual of the particular model of furnace you have on the internet and see and print off what you need to do to clean it and get it working again. I suggest you go to bing.com and type in the name, model number and parts for which you need to see the repair manual and see if you come up with anything. Perhaps you have the pamphlet that came with the furnace that may have some information that will help you. In any case, don’t light a match when you smell gas or you may blow up everything. Good luck to you.

yes you can light it that way . the pilot is more for convenience just make sure that you don’t have any other leaks .
