Air Force active duty vs reserves?

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Hey there I was looking into possibly joining the air force, I have not spoken to any recruiters yet, because I feel they may tell me what I want to hear to get me to join. At the same time, I don’t know if I am to old to join. I am 25, and got a 4 yr degree in finance/economics, worked in finance for 2 years and didn’t like it. What is the average age group in boot camp? 18 yrs I am assuming? I also saw on there website that in order to become a pilot you must have a 4yr degree and pass the physical requirements, but would anyone know how likely it is to become a pilot even if you pass those requirements? I also want to become a cop, that’s why I was debating reserves vs active duty, but at the same time, cops are being cut back now due to the economy especially in my state of Massachusetts. Any feedback and more would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

I want to join the army infantry but I have a GED so I can’t right now. The national guard says I can join then after boot camp easily switch from part time national guard to full time active army. Is this true I live in new jersey. Thanks for all answers.

I am an E-4 enlisted in the Idaho National Guard and have 80 credits towards my degree and want to know how the best way to make the most money while I finish my degree would be. I am offered traditional ocs at 60credits and I am offered fast track ocs at 90 credits. I heard from a Captain that was at the education center hear in Camp Victory in Baghdad that there is a way to go about school and commisioning that you can get paid active duty pay of a 0-1 while finishing your degree. Any advise on what to do would be great. Thank you.

First of all, I would like answers from people who served ONE or TWO enlistments MAXIMUM and are not military RETIREES as I am someone who only did one enlistment in the Marine Corps and then got out. Secondly, if you HAVE NOT EVER WORN ON THE UNIFORM OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, then I RESPECTFULLY request that you do not answer my question and/or give me smart aleck responses because that is NOT what I’m looking for. So, to get to my question, I am debating on whether or not I should stay in Colorado when I transfer to a four year university or if I should move to Texas and attend A&M or UT-Austin. I moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado after getting out of the Marines because my sister’s now ex husband pulled some strings and helped me get a civilian job with high tech company here manufacturing semi conductors. So, my place of work closed down and I’m still here. Unfortunately, I have found it impossible to find a g/f here or to date because Colorado Springs is mostly an Army and Air Force town where all of the women are married and is pretty much like Jacksonville, NC (Camp Lejeune) or Fayetteville, NC (Fort Bragg). The few unmarried civilian women that do live here are VERY unapproachable, stuck up, rude, and cold and will not give you the time of day UNLESS you grew up here in Colorado Springs or went to high school here. In other words, women here are EXTREMELY cliquish. I am from the South and I know for a fact that women aren’t like this everywhere and are just like this here in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Finding a g/f and wife is important to me because I would like to be able to get settle down and have my own family one day. On that note, I realize that it is imperative that I pick the correct city and state to relocate to that will be conducive to my goals. Other ex military folks have said that I should SOLELY focus on my education right now and not worry about finding a g/f or wife and I disagree with that statement in the highest degree. Folks, I am a 28 y/o man for pete’s sake and I am not getting any younger. I have been single for the entire time that I have lived in Colorado Springs due to the backwards people that live here. I will be at least 30 years old because I delayed my education because I sold my soul to the Marine Corps for no less than FIVE years of my adult life and that is the reason that I am just now getting my education UNLIKE everyone else my age. Being 28, do you seriously believe that I should continue to “not worry about finding a g/f until after I graduate”? Seriously? If I heed the advice that some of you all have told me then I am going to end up a 40 y/o single guy and that’s not what I want out of life. Also, before anyone brings this up, Marines are generally hated in disliked by young women in eastern North Carolina because their dads tell them that Marines are nothing but a bunch of trouble makers and I learned that by personal experience! So now, being stationed at Camp Lejeune as a Marine is pretty much a prison sentence for us single guys. Believe it or not, being stationed at Camp Lejeune causes ALOT of first term single male Marines to EAS (i.e. get out) and I was one of them.

I am currently in a Chapter 13 plan (since 4/05). I live in CA and have been a homeowner from 1998 till right before filing my Chapter 13 due to an expensive & litigious Divorce. Unfortunately, I am unable to afford a home based on real estate prices in California. I have restablished credit (below the $1000 threshold allowed) & my credit score is 600 which I’ve been told is very good for an active BK. In regards to taxes, I can no longer claim my kids and I’ve lost the homeowner’s deduction, I would like to purchase an RV as a permanent residence. I have checked with an attorney and a tax advisor who both advise this is a smart move based on my income and tax bracket. The attorney advises that the Chapter 13 Trustee will, most likely, approve this purchase. My challenge is finding a lender that will lend me the money for the purchase that reports interest paid to the IRS. I am looking at a $35000 purchase including tax and fees. I have access to 401k funds for a 30% downpayment on a collateralized loan on a used RV. According to my tax advisor, interest paid on a primary residence (yes, even an RV) has no real limit, so I would be willing to pay up to 25% APR based on my finances and credit history. Any suggestions on lenders, alternative means of financing or am I just plain crazy…
In addition I have a free place to park. Includes all utilities free. Does anyone know any ‘alternative’ finance companies that report interest to the IRS? APR does not matter up to 25%. Based on my income and tax bracket this the best situation for me.

I am doing active solar power for my science project and am making a solar air heater.

It’s an example of active (not passive) right? I just want to be sure. Thanks.

Any suggestions on parks and campgrounds in Ark for a family weekend camping? We are tent campers and looking for fishing, kayaking, swimming, bike riding (off road), hiking. There is a lot to do, but what is your favorite?

I was set to go camping with a friend this weekend here in Virginia, but it turns out there is a statewide fire ban so that has seriously destroyed our plans.

I would consider going to Maryland but I’m not real keen on going into the woods if there is an active hunting season going on.

Please advise.
Beth, I appreciate the details. Unfortunately, it’s not the actual camping that I am concerned about , it’s the daytime hiking and not really being familiar with the facility.
