George Washington was born on Monday, February 22, 1732. When he turned 3, he moved to Mount Vernon. When he was 7 years old, he moved closer to his family’s blacksmith shop. Mount Vernon didn’t become his true home until later in life. When Washington wad 11, his father, Augustine Washington, died. Washington then became the man of the house. George Washington was a somewhat unusual child. From a young age, he longed for honor. When his father died, Washington then looked up to his half-brother, Lawrence. Lawrence had married into a wealthy English family and was a British soldier. When he died, Washington was devastated.
George Washington was an amazing man. There is no doubt that his characteristics helped with that. He had a temper. That is something that we have almost forgotten about him. But it was there, and he kept it under control. He knew it was there, and that it could be volcanic if he lost control of it. He was very thoughtful. One time shortly after he left presidency, a friend was staying at Mount Vernon. During part of that time he had a terrible cold and cough. Suddenly the curtains were draw back and there stood Washington, holding a big bowl of herbal tea. “Drink this,” he said. “It will be good for that cough.”
He fought as a member in the Virginia Regiment in the French and Indian War. While doing so, he learned how to organize an army of about a thousand men. Washington later said, “I had four bullet holes through my coat and two horses shot under me.”
When George Washington was 26 years old, he married a widow named Martha Curtis. Although Washington never had any children of his own, he helped Martha raise her children from her previous marriage. George was a loving step father. He had two step children, the eldest a girl named Patsy, the younger one a boy named Jack. He also helped raise some of his step grandchildren and a niece.
Washington’s Great-Grandfather, John Washington, was given the land where Mount Vernon now stands. Washington took Mount Vernon and changed it from house to mansion. He added on many new rooms, like the large dining room. He designed these rooms himself. He loved riding horses. He learned how to ride when he was a young boy. He was often seen riding at five in the morning around Mount Vernon’s farms and plantations. It was his favorite place in the whole world.
George Washington was an amazing military officer. He had saved many lives in the French and Indian War. He had been a member of the Second Continental Congress. But when the congress had to choose someone to be commander in chief of the Continental Army and chose him, he retired when they chose him to be commander in chief. Washington then went home to prepare for the war.
When General Washington arrived at camp a couple of weeks later, he was amazed at how sloppy, undisciplined, and downright disrespectful the men were. During the first battle that the men fought against the British they ran, and when General Washington found out from one of his officers he said, “There running? Why are they running?” The officer responded by saying, “Because they can’t fly.” What a smart mouth!
The first time the Americans won a battle while General Washington was Commander in Chief was the Battle of Saratoga. Although the general himself was not there when it happened, he was very happy. I think that we can all agree that he was one proud dad right then.
A few other times that the “Yankees” won were the Battle of Trenton, the Battle of Concord, the Delaware River Battle, and the Battle of Yorktown. This refers to the Battle of Yorktown. In this battle, the Americans surround the British in the middle of the night. All of the American troops were there. They built forts all around the British camp and started firing the cannons. When those lobster brains woke up they freaked out. The British ran inside house and when they finally ran out of food and water, they had no choice but to surrender unless they wanted to die of starvation. So they came out waving a white flag.
General Washington resigned from his position as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army on December 23, 1783, right after the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The first thing he did when he arrived at Mount Vernon was to go and look at the grounds.
Washington was asked to president over the Constitutional Convention in 1787 because people knew that if he was president of the convention that the states would be more likely to accept the new constitution. The government had been too weak, and the new nation was falling apart.
George Washington became the first president of the United States of America on April 30, 1789. He had the shortest Inaugural Address in the history of the United States.
General Washington died on Saturday, December 14, 1799. He hadn’t even been sick for two days when died. He died of shock, asphyxia and dehydration. He was buried at Mount Vernon in the family vault.
